''2017 AAP/EFP PERIO CLASSIFICATIONS : WHAT'S YOUR CLIENT ?''


SPEAKER:
KELLY TURNER AND PAULA MALCOMSON , RDH, BA, BEd, MAdEd
Kelly Turner has been an educator since 1996 for Fanshawe College's Dental Hygiene program. Most recently she has been involved as the Program Coordinator as of 2017. Kelly complete her degree in Kinesiology from Western University in 1991 and then completed Fanshawe's Dental Assisting Program and later Fanshawe's Dental Hygiene program in 1995. Currently, Kelly is working on her Professional Master's of Education from Queen's University. Kelly worked in private practice for about 10 years until becoming full time at the college. Kelly is active in the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board as an item writer and reviewer. She is a former evaluator for CDHO practical exams and participated in the development of the Canadian Performance Exam in Dental Hygiene as a subject matter expert. Professional speaking engagements have included a presentation on Radiographic Interpretation for the Dental Hygienist to local society meetings, and most recently, Kelly presented the AAP Classification to educators at a Canadian Dental Hygiene Association Educators conference in Toronto. This is the presentation that will available for our London and District Dental Hygienist Society. Paula Malcomson received her certificate in Dental Assisting from Fanshawe College and diploma in Dental Hygiene from Algonquin College. Following this, Paula completed her bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Western University. After working in dental hygiene clinical practice for 10 years, Paula became a clinical instructor in Dental Hygiene programs in Toronto. The love of teaching and mentorship of colleagues spurred Paula on tocomplete her Bachelor's in Adult Education from Brock University. Paula joined the full time faculty in the dental programs at Fanshawe College in 2008. Continuing her love of higher learning and clinical education, Paula completed her Master's in Adult Education at St. Francis Xavier University. Paula presented her Master's research at the Greater New York Dental Meeting in 2018 and at Fanshawe College's Research and Innovation Day in 2019.

This presentation will introduce the 2017 AAP/EFP Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Disease and Conditions. A brief comparison of the 1999 AAP Classification for Periodontal Diseases and Conditions will
include an overview of the calculation of clinical attachment loss. Moving forward to 2017, the highlights will be presented and through the use of case studies, participants can learn from practical application using
staging and grading when discussing Periodontal conditions with their clients.
